Think Twice and Consider It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In recent years there has been more talk of genetic testing, but can that test affect your ability to buy insurance?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>The unfortunate answer is \u201cyes\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Insurance companies, other than Health Insurance Companies &#8211; Obamacare (ACA) can use this information to charge higher premiums or decline your coverage altogether.<br \/>\nAs of today insurance companies continue to lobby to access this information stating it allows them to better class people for insurance rates.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>On the other hand, privacy advocates state this invades a person\u2019s privacy for an issue over which the person has no control.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Then, how are these and-like issues handled in the future?<br \/>\nSo, what does this mean to you?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>If you are 30 years old buying life insurance for the protection of your family, without genetic testing you may be able to get the best possible premium rating.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>However, the same person who has had a genetic test showing markers for a life-threatening disease may have a premium 4 times higher.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>They could even be declined.<br \/>\nWhat is genetic testing?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Simply, it is a medical test that identifies changes in your chromosomes, genes, or proteins.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>The results can identify if you are predisposed to one or more certain diseases.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>The results can also show you the likelihood of passing these genes to your children.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s important to note that having a positive result does not necessarily mean that you will contract the disease.<br \/>\nHow do insurance companies find your genetic testing results?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Commonly they are found in your doctor\u2019s records, medical exam, prescription data base or the Medical Information Bureau (MIB).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>The MIB maintains records of medical procedures, tests, hospital stays, and examinations kept in a database for 7 years.<br \/>\nSo, what can you do?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>First, be prudent.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>If you are considering genetic testing or even speaking with your doctor about a genetic marker a family member found through a genetic test, talk with a genetic counselor. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Ask if this testing can be considered part of a research study.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>If so, these records do not go into your medical file.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>You may ask yourself what you would do differently if you knew you had the marker and start doing it now, without taking the test.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Consider postponing a test until after your current insurance program is in order \u2014 talk with an insurance professional.<br \/>\nIf you have already had a positive genetic test, ask your agent questions:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>What insurance companies do not ask genetic testing questions? Is there a No-Medical exam company that you can use?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>What\u2019s the premium difference?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Will, I need an exam for this company?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Some insurance companies underwrite genetic testing and pre-existing conditions differently \u2014 Ask which companies might work best in your situation.<br \/>\nOne might think this only applies to younger people buying life insurance.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>That would be a mistake.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Genetic testing also plays a role in underwriting for long-term care insurance.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Know that insurance companies only request 5 years of medical records and the MIB show 7 years.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>If the insurance company does not ask a generic testing question \u2014 it would be best not to volunteer that information.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Be prudent, do your research and work with qualified professionals in the insurance industry and genetic counselors.<br \/>\nSo, what can you do?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Research how genetic testing may affect you. Put your insurance protection in order.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Talk with a Genetic Counselor.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>The considers asking to have the genetic testing done as a research study.<br \/>\nResources:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>A resource is the \u201cNational Society of Genetic Counselors <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsgc.org\">www.nsgc.org<\/a>.
