{"id":15778,"date":"2021-02-01T08:47:29","date_gmt":"2021-02-01T08:47:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.livingbyyourdesigninc.com\/?p=15778"},"modified":"2021-11-04T00:12:08","modified_gmt":"2021-11-04T00:12:08","slug":"social-security-wiggle-your-toes-in-the-sand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.livingbyyourdesigninc.com\/index.php\/2021\/02\/01\/social-security-wiggle-your-toes-in-the-sand\/","title":{"rendered":"Wiggle Your Toes in the Sand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Steven Buttice, Founder and President,\u00a0Living by Your Design, Inc.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s February and how would you like to be \u201cwiggling your toes in the Florida sand\u201d?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You can do it, but it doesn\u2019t happen by accident.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Many people have saved a portion or of their income over time so they can enjoy such pleasures. Now is the time they can share their wisdom with their adult children and grandkids the value of systematically saving, even if starting with small amounts, for retirement.<br \/>\nThe building up of savings just doesn\u2019t happen and people just cannot expect an inheritance or lottery to provide all of the saving\/income they will need in the future.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So that is why we create a plan.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If you do not plan you will not be able to live the \u201ctoes in the sand life\u201d you envision in retirement.<br \/>\nIn a global look &#8211; Stages of life include the accumulation and the distribution periods.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Of course, each of these stages evolve over time.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s best to start planning early \u2013 age 20 or so. It is never too late, but results are better earlier you start planning.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Locate a good financial planner that will work with you.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They will help with you develop a plan.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then, more importantly stick to it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The plan should be reviewed yearly.<br \/>\nWould you want your wishes to come true even if you weren\u2019t able to help put the plan in place?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Legal counsel is very important.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Locate a good attorney.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Have them develop your Will, Powers of Attorney (POA), and possibly a Trust.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s important to review as changes such as a child\u2019s birth, marriage or divorce occur, every five years. A question for you: \u201cI am married do I need a healthcare POA?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The answer is YES!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s always a good idea to appoint the person you want making decisions about your healthcare, should you become incapacitated, and make sure they know ahead of time what your wishes are.<br \/>\nThe next question becomes: how do you best guarantee your growing account(s) will be there for you and your family?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What if you are not able to work? What if you have an accident and medical expenses? <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Part of your plan should include medical insurance, disability coverage to provide money if you are not able to work, and life insurance for your family\u2019s security.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Qualified insurance agents can assist you with these subjects. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nAge 62 and eligibility for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\">Social Security<\/a> retirement (SS) will happen before you know it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s important to know most people wait until full retirement age (66 &#8211; 2 months if born in 1955) before drawing SS.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In situations where someone is very ill and may not live to age 66; drawing SS at age 62 may make good sense.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Your advisers here would include your financial advisor and a Social Security consultant.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Note:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Social Security is very complicated \u2013 do not assume and only rely trusted experts in this field.<br \/>\nAs you reach your 50\u2019s, 60\u2019s, 70\u2019s and 80\u2019s your planning changes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Look at your family health, your health (especially chronic conditions), habits, such as smoking, to honestly look at what your future health may look like.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Now is a good idea time to discuss what you want retirement to look like.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Does it make sense to stay in your home which may include multiple levels and stairs?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Do you want to move to a different state?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Also, realistically discuss tough subjects like home health care, assisted living communities and nursing homes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Please note:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m just \u201cnever\u201d going to a community is not a realistic option for most people.
